Navy (SEAL/Parachutist) Petty Officer 1st Class Christopher G. Campbell, 36, of Jacksonville, N.C., died Aug. 6 in Wardak province, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when a CH-47 Chinook helicopter crashed (shot down by insurgents). He was assigned to an East Coast-based Naval Special Warfare unit. Also killed were 21 other Navy Seals, 5 soldiers and 3 airmen.

Army Spc. Jocelyn L. Carrasquillo, 28, of Wrightsville Beach, N.C.; assigned to the 1st Battalion, 120th Infantry Regiment, Army National Guard, Wilmington, N.C.; killed March 13 when an improvised explosive device hit his vehicle on the main supply route in Iraq.

Army Spc. Jacob C. Carroll, 20, of Clemmons, N.C.; assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, Ky.; died Nov. 13 in Kandahar province, Afghanistan, when an insurgent suicide bomber detonated a vest bomb and struck his unit. Also killed were Cpl. Jacob R. Carver and Staff Sgt. Juan L. Rivadeneira.

Cockerham III, 21, of Conover, N.C.; assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, N.C.; killed Oct. 21 when his vehicle was struck by an improvised explosive device while conducting combat operations against enemy forces near Amariyah, Iraq. His vehicle was traveling beside a canal when the attack occurred and he was thrown from the vehicle into the water. Also killed was Capt. Tyler B. Swisher.
