Taylor, 20, of Pinetown, N.C.; assigned to the 1st Squadron, 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment, Fort Hood, Texas; died June 25 in Mosul, Iraq, of wounds sustained when his vehicle encountered an improvised explosive device on June 24. Also killed were Sgt. Alejandro A. Dominguez and Pfc. James M. Yohn.

Tellier, 31, of Charlotte, N.C.; assigned to the 4th Squadron, 73rd Cavalry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, N.C.; died Sept. 29 at Firebase Wilderness, Afghanistan, of wounds sustained when insurgents attacked his unit using small-arms fire.

Navy Hospital Corpsman 3rd Class Christopher W. Thompson, 25, of N. Wilkesboro, N.C.; assigned to Echo Company, 2nd Battalion, 2nd Marines, 8th Regimental Combat Team, 2nd Marine Division, Fleet Marine Forces Atlantic, based in Camp Lejeune, N.C.; killed Oct. 21 by an improvised explosive device while conducting combat operations in Anbar province, Iraq.

Army Spc. David N. Timmons Jr. 23, of Lewisville, N.C.; assigned to the 71st Cavalry Regiment, 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry), Fort Drum N.Y.; died May 5 when the CH-47 Chinook helicopter he was traveling on crashed during combat operations east of Abad, Afghanistan, in the Kunar province. Also killed were: Pfc. Brian M. Moquin Jr., Spc. Justin L. O’Donohoe, Sgt. Jeffery S. Wiekamp, Sgt. John C. Griffith, Sgt. Bryan A. Brewster, Staff Sgt. Christopher T. Howick, Chief Warrant Officer 2 Christopher B. Donaldson, Chief Warrant Officer 3 Eric W. Totten and Lt. Col. Joseph J. Fenty.

Army Sgt. Michael L. Tosto, 24, of Apex, N.C.; assigned to Company A, 1st Battalion, 35th Armored Regiment, 1st Armored Division, Smith Barracks, Germany; died June 17, at Camp Wolf, Kuwait. He died from a non-combat related cause.

Marine Lance Cpl. Mason J. Vanderwork, 21, of Hickory, N.C.; assigned to 1st Battalion, 9th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, N.C.; died March 18 when a mortar exploded in its firing tube during a training exercise at Hawthorne Army Depot in Nevada. Also died from the same incident were, Pfc. Joshua M. Martino, Cpl. David P. Fenn II, Cpl. Roger W. Muchnick Jr., Lance Cpl. Joshua C. Taylor, Lance Cpl. William T. Wild IV, and Cpl. Aaron J. Ripperda.


Van Dorn, J. Wesley, USN

Lt. J. Wesley Van Dorn, 29, of Greensboro, North Carolina died on January 8 when a MH-53E Sea Dragon Helicopter crashed in the Atlantic Ocean off the Virginia coast. He was assigned to Helicopter Mine Countermeasures Squadron 14, based out of Naval Air Station Norfolk. Also died from the same incident was Petty Officer 3rd Class Brian Andrew Collins and Lt. Sean Christopher Snyder.

Varnadore II 29, of Hendersonville, N.C.; assigned to 1st Attack Reconnaissance Battalion, 10th Combat Aviation Brigade, 10th Mountain Division, Fort Drum, N.Y.; died April 23 in Alah Say Valley, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when his helicopter went down due to an undetermined cause.

He were assigned to the 1132nd Military Police Company, North Carolina Army National Guard, Rocky Mount, N.C. Also killed were Sgt. Thomas C. Ray, II and Spc. David S. Stelmat.

Wilson, 30, of Chapel Hill, N.C.; assigned to the 1st Squadron, 9th Cavalry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Regiment, Fort Bliss, Texas; killed Sept. 6 when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle during combat operations in Mosul, Iraq. Also died the following day from wounds suffered in the same incident were Spc. Jason J. Hernandez and Spc. Thomas L. Hilbert.

Woodard, Romanes L., USA

Army Staff Sgt. Romanes L. Woodard 30, of Hertford, N.C.; assigned to the 1st Battalion, 508th Infantry Regiment, Camp Ederle, Italy; killed April 6 when the CH-47 helicopter in which he was riding crashed in Ghazni, Afghanistan. Fifteen service members were killed or are unaccounted for in the crash.
